MYTHS ABOUT PHYSIOTHERAPY AND PHYSICAL THERAPY
There are some common misconceptions that often discourage people from visiting a physiotherapist or physical therapist. Firstly I would like to tell that physiotherapy and physical therapy is the one and same thing.
1. I need a referral to see a physical therapist:
Physiotherapists or physical therapists are trained healthcare professional with valid degrees, minimum a Bachelor's Degree which include 4 year intensive training in Government recognized college and 6 months compulsory rotatory internship from a hospital of repute. Physiotherapists can assess diagnose and treat you like any other doctor so you can visit a physical therapist directly.
Most of the patients suffering from pain thinks that their pain will increase if they do therapy and therapeutic exercises. It is to be noted that physiotherapist will never suggest you the exercises or routines which can induce pain to the body. Even exercises are not advised in some painful conditions.
3. Physical therapy is only for injuries and accidents:
It is a common myth that physiotherapy is only for musculoskeletal injuries. This is not the fact, infect the physiotherapy had its fully grown branches like neurology, pediatrics and cardiology etc. Physical therapist do lot more than just stretch or strength the weak muscle after surgery or injury. They are fully trained doctors,They are skilled at evaluating and diagnosing potential problem before they lead to more serious injuries or disabling condition.
4. Any health care professional can perform physical therapy:
It is very commonly seen that physical therapy is being practiced by other medical professionals without any training like nurses and occupational therapists.
5. I can do my physical therapy myself:
Your participation during the treatment session is a key to a successful and plan, but every patient still needs the expert care and guidance of a qualified licensed physical therapist. You cant replace a physiotherapist by doing the advised exercises at home.
6. Surgery is the only option:
In my practice of physiotherapy i have seen many patients who recovered without the surgery by only with the help of therapy itself. Knee surgeries and back surgery can also be avoided in many cases.
7. Physical therapy isn't covered by insurance:
It was commonly believed that physiotherapy is not covered by insurance but nowadays physiotherapy is also covered by the insurance companies along with the surgeries and other conditions.
